if you look closely at the washington memorial, you can see a patch of discoloration on the bottom section of the structure. this is due to water damage resulting from when president nixon famously and controversially let the government open the water gate in 1973. this caused washington dc to flood and the damage took many years to repair. the american people voted to impeach president nixon for this oversight. it is widely remembered as one of the worst decisions in the world.
Actually wasn’t that because construction was stopped for a time for some reason idk but then when I started again they couldn’t get the same material
im pretty sure it was because of the water gate
Watergate was a scandal that happened in which documents were destroyed in the watergate building which lead to his impeachment. Not an actual watergate
there is a lot of conflicting information out there and probably a lot of different cover-ups to be found. who knows what really happened.
::in my granny voice:: You kids! You coulda looked this up, you know!
The Democratic headquarters for the 1972 elections was located in the Watergate Hotel in Washington. Nixon’s staff set up a plan to wiretap their phones. On their third attempt a security guard saw signs of a burglar and arrested them. The FBI discovered the name of other Nixon officials in one of the “burglar’s” address books, and they started investigating. It started a long mess involving illegal funds, illegal committees, illegal spying, a criminal Attorney General, taped recordings that Nixon had had erased (which looked very bad), an anonymous informant who told two reporters a lot more bad things the White House was up to. In the end, Nixon resigned before he could be impeached by Congress, and Gerald Ford, the new president, pardoned him immediately so he couldn’t be investigated any further.
Some people even say that’s why the Republicans hate the Democrats today, because of their slimy buddy Richard Nixon.
That’s Watergate. Not a flood in the Washington Mall that left a mark on the Washington Monument! If you can track down a book called ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, it will tell you about it. What are they teaching for history these days?
